Finding a Place to Land

There was a time when much of the mental health community did not believe that children and teenagers could suffer from the same disorders as adults.

Today, we know that not only are teens subject to mental health challenges, they are usually less equipped to deal with the consequences than adults. And that makes the need for teen mental health support that much more urgent.

Consider:

  • One in 10 people aged 5 – 16 suffer from a diagnosable mental health disorder
  • 4%, or about 195,000 young people have an anxiety disorder
  • Between 1 in every 12 and 1 in 15 children and young people deliberately self-harm
  • The number of young people being admitted to hospital because of self-harm over the last ten years has increased by 68%
  • More than half of all adults with mental health problems were diagnosed in childhood. Less than half were treated appropriately at the time
  • Nearly 80,000 children and teens suffer from severe depression
  • The number of young people aged 15-16 with depression nearly doubled between the 1980s and the 2000s

The challenge then becomes the next step. At Polaris Teen Adolescent Mental Health Facility in Los Angeles we understand the hesitancy some parents may have to get treatment for their children. Many parents believe, for example, that their teen’s negative mental health, teenage substance abuse, or teen eating disorder is a direct reflection on their abilities as parents. Nothing could be further from the truth.

The fact is that except in cases of extreme verbal or physical abuse, or sexual abuse, there is usually little that parents could have done to prevent a teen’s mental disorder.

What is required first is an accurate diagnosis from a reputable mental health expert. At some point after the diagnosis, the treatment options, one of which may be admission to a residential mental health program like the one at Polaris Teenage Residential Treatment Center in Los Angeles.

Parents have been bringing their teens to Polaris for years not only for the caring environment and experienced therapeutic support, but also because many teens find settings at home and at school stressful, pressure-filled and overwhelming: resulting in depression, substance abuse, eating disorders, or numerous other self-destructive behaviors.
